Hi I downloaded the fvdw tool ( 14-0-9jun13) and the image I chose was the standard one "UIMAGE-26394-NWSP2CL-STANDALONE-164" - if this answer your question.

yes this answer my question and it is the correct one.
When you use that standalone kernel the dmesg output should be clean without the error message as you posted. Below the dmesg output of a my 5big2 when running the standalone kernel.
Also not the difference in time stamps, mines complte loading in 13 seconds, yours fails after 102 seconds, reason it is waiting for the disks..
It could be helpful to see were it fails if you post the full output of dmesg command

Why not?

Anyway, when there is a power problem, it might help to just remove one disk from the enclosure. Then the power consumption is almost 20% lower, while the array still could be assembled.

If that doesn't work, and your dmesg dump doesn't show anything helpful, I'm afraid your only option is to connect at least 4 disks to a Linux computer, and assemble the array. Any PC can do that. A problem is that you'll need 4 empty sata sockets. An usb-sata convertor probably won't work. I have read several reports that such a convertor exposes 4k logical sectors to the host, when a disk >2TB is inserted. And while that is fine for an external disk, unfortunately the current partition table is not compatible.

Yes it is indeed very slow in booting. I also always have a timeout on the telnet client because of this and have to connect manually (just for info :) ) . Last time I posted the dmesg, I copied only to part from "cut it off" or something. But now the whole thing (from a fresh boot, I always power the NAS off at the moment when I'm not "investigating" to prevent "further damage"):

Code: Select all

@Mijzelf
Ok you're right that could be the case. I just thought because the "led" of the power-supply is in a light-blue color. Everything is alright. So I put the middle disk out and booted again (to the dashboard):
the boot was still very slow and disk 3 and 5 were hoswn as "missing" and 4 as "empty".

The slow boot is indeed the cause that telnet is not availaible after 12 seconds. it is loaded after the kernel is fully loaded (in your case after 102 seconds)

It seems to me that ata2 (the second sata port) clearly has a problem

The port itself seems to come up but the disk seems to fail to come up. This can be a disk failure but also a power failure preventing the disk to spin up.
ata1 having sda, sdb and sdc seems to be ok

You could take out the last two disks (in slot 4 and 5) and see if it then boots without an error.

So I did this and when I power the NAS on he is kinda loud (much more noise than before) and only the 2 leds of the missing HDs are glowing (see & hear in video) and he WONT boot anymore. Not even with the fvdw tool.

:scratch
sounds like a power supply hum but the actual power supply is outside the box. I think the fan is controlled by the mainboard but it now seems to halt very early in the boot.

I suggest to take out all the disks and reboot with the standalone kernel.
remember the sequence where the disk were so you can restore them in same order.

Well this is one of the few things were Lacie did something well :P All disks + all places are numbered with stickers :)

And now the boot was fast as hell:

Re: Another LaCie 5big Network 2 problem

Postby fvdw » Tue Sep 10, 2013 8:13 pm

this a "normal" dmesg output, both sata ports are detected and initialized including port multipliers.

The problem arises when a multiple disk ares plugged in. This smells to a power supply issue, not sufficient to make the disk start rotating. That could also explains the humming sounds. Could come form the disk not able to spin up.
I am not a raid expert but I know you need at least 3 disks to rebuild the array. So it could be risky to let it boot with only 1 disk. probably nothing will happen as it will fail to build the array. "Mijzelf" is very knowledgeable on raid array so lets also ask his advice.

If you have an empty or spare sata disk you could put that in in slot 1 and see if it boots. If that goes ok try also slot 4 and 5.
I advise not to use a disk with your raid array on it for this experiment

How to check the power supply is another question.

Hmm ok thanks, I will wait for his answer then.

What I dont see is:
Why is the humming soudn only there when I remove 2 disk -shouldn't it be the exact opposite?

And I think for raid 5 there are even 4 disk needed for the rebuild ;) So if I don't have 4 healthy disks am bascially f**ked

I tried booting with 2, 2 TB hds.

slot 1:

Code: Select all
